The department of clinical Microbiology is located on the 6th floor of the Annexe Building of Tata Memorial Hospital, is spread over an area of 2800 sq/ft.
Service activities
The department offers specialized diagnostic services in the areas of:
- Bacteriology
- Mycology (Fungal infections)
- Mycobacteriology (Tuberculosis)
- Examination of urine and stool
- Serology for viral infections.
- Molecular diagnostic methods for viral infections.
All the above tests are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (NABL).
The quality systems are compliant with the ISO / IEC 15189 standard guidelines.
Automated state of the art equipment is available for blood cultures, tuberculosis diagnostics and molecular diagnostics.
The department provides services on all days of the week. The technologists and staff of the department are trained to work independently, to ensure smooth functioning and compliance with the quality systems.
The menu of tests includes all the facilities required for the diagnosis and management of infections in cancer patients. The department serves as a referral centre for some of the specialized molecular diagnostic tests.
The department provides services for environmental testing and water testing in the hospital.
Infection control
Implementation of best practices for infection control including surveillance of healthcare associated infections is under the scope of Microbiology.
The scientific staff conducts the business of the Education and Hospital Infection Control Committee as active members.
Waste management
The department provides a holistic waste management system and is responsible for treatment of the waste generated in the hospital. The equipment being used is the HydroclaveTM and the department sterilizes 300 – 400 kilograms of infectious waste daily.
Academics
The department is recognized by the University of Mumbai and the Homi Bhabha National Institute for the Masters program and the PhD Program in medical Microbiology.
The projects undertaken by students are based on the clinical research needs of cancer patients. The department participates in clinical trials.
The scientific members have several publications in national and international journals.
The department conducts a certificate course in Hospital Infection Control once a year in affiliation with SNDT Womens’ University.
